Big Wolves News on Its Way???

June 27th, 2009 Howlintwolf No comments

A source I have with the Wolves was just told that there is big news coming either tonight or tomorrow.

I have no idea what it is or if it really is BIG or just big news.

Could Kahn have gotten an offer for Rubio that he couldn’t refuse? Could someone have offered something good for Flynn?

Should be interesting to see what it is (maybe its not so big) but stay tuned to the Wolves and don’t change the channel.

If I hear of anything more it will be on Twitter before here so be sure to follow me there @howlintwolf.

UPDATE: Ok so it’s not BIG news but Rubio and his father flew into town yesterday to meet with Kahn. Sources say the Wolves staff was told to come in early tomorrow.

Probably won’t be a press conference but if anything happens we’ll be sure to update you.

UPDATE II: And the sounds of silence continue. As I expected no press conference and we won’t know how the meeting went becuase Kahn has chose to have no comment in respect to the Rubio’s who are in a tough situation with the contract buyout.

As always any developments will be reported but with Kahn now on the road focusing on finding a coach as well as Free Agent season starting we’re probably a couple weeks away from an update on Senor Rubio.

David Kahn’s Post-Draft Letter to Timberwolves Fans

June 26th, 2009 Howlintwolf No comments

David Kahn gave this letter to Timberwolves beat writer Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune to post on his blog this morning:

Dear Timberwolves Fans and Supporters:

It’s been five weeks since I arrived in Minneapolis and I hope you can feel what I feel: change.

I especially want to talk about last night’s draft and explain why we made the decisions we did.

First, from a philosophical standpoint, I believe that teams should select players in the top 10 of the NBA Draft who have the chance — and I underline the word chance — to be special later in their careers.  You do not use the fifth and sixth picks to select rotation players, but only players that figure to be starters, if not out-and-out stars.

So, we were committed to taking two players who fit that description, and we were less concerned about the positions they played, assuming they were not power forwards.

There were several two-person options we would have been comfortable with at those selections.

It wasn’t until late Thursday afternoon that I thought there was a chance Ricky Rubio might be available for us at No. 5.  I had actually been told by somebody who I deeply respect in the NBA that Ricky would be selected third by Oklahoma City.  But we were prepared for all options nonetheless.

Ricky has one of the most tenacious, most capable agents in our sport, Dan Fegan.  He cares deeply about his clients.  I explained to Dan late afternoon that we were singularly motivated to build an NBA championship-contending team in Minnesota — that it might take a few years, of course — but that nobody here cared about anything other than competing for an NBA title.  That we have only one life to live, and that we must spend our lives trying, as Pat Riley once taught me, to leave footprints.

I purposely selected Ricky with the fifth pick, not the sixth, to help with his buyout situation.  Ricky and his family have taken a very bold step to enter the NBA despite having two years remaining on his contract with his Spanish team.  I know that they would have preferred that we try to move to the second or third pick to take him, and I respect their wishes, but my belief was that we need during these next 15 months to acquire multiple pieces to make this a championship-contending team over the next three-to-four years.  The price for moving to No. 2 or 3 was far too steep.

Ricky is a proven professional who played against the USA in the Gold Medal game in the Beijing Olympics.  He is a virtuoso, a rare player who may well be unique.  I have long believed that he has the chance to become one of basketball’s brightest stars.   You’ve seen the highlights — he is like an orchestra conductor with the basketball.

He will be our starting point guard here the moment he walks through our front door.  We may have to wait a year, or even two, but he is worth the wait.  We must be patient.  This is a big step for he and his family.

With the sixth pick, we selected Jonny Flynn.  I truly believe that Jonny is as much a scorer as a playmaker and will thrive playing off of Ricky.  I also believe that, together, we will have one of the most dynamic defensive backcourts in the NBA over time.  You will love Jonny Flynn.  He, too, will be special.

And I also believe that there is a tendency in the NBA for all of us (myself included) to become too formulaic in our thinking.  If you think of the Detroit Pistons backcourts during their championship run, with Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars and Vinnie Johnson, or the Celtics with their backcourt of Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson (and before Ainge there was Gerald Henderson), or the Lakers with Jerry West and Gail Goodrich, or the Knicks with Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe, there are many instances of championship success that is not so paint-by-the-numbers.

It can and will work.

At the 18th pick, we did not believe we could identify a player who would be worthy of that rookie scale slot and become part of our core nucleus, so in an attempt to further stockpile assets, we traded it for a future first-round pick with only modest lottery protection.  This will prove to be valuable.  We also traded one of our two second-round picks for a 2010 second-round pick.

Finally, we selected Wayne Ellington with the 28th pick, one of the stars off the North Carolina National Championship team.  Wayne is a 6-foot-5 shooter who has improved dramatically this season.  He will help us soon.  And, last but not least, we used our remaining second-round pick to take Henk Norel, a teammate of Ricky’s in Spain, who is long and athletic.  Norel has one year remaining on his contract.

What excites me most about this team is the following:

Al Jefferson, at 24, is the oldest player of our four future building blocks.  Kevin Love is 20.  Jonny Flynn is 20.  Ricky is 18.  Wayne Ellington is 21.  And let’s not forget Corey Brewer is 23, Ryan Gomes is 26 and Sebastian Telfair just turned 24.

We will need a special coach who understands that we are very much in the development stage and need to be shaped and molded.  I have already talked to Al Jefferson and kevin Love about the qualities they would like to see in their new coach — what kind of person we should be seeking — and will also consult with our new players.  Players respect structure and discipline.  They want to know where they stand.  And they want to know the coach has their back.  I am eager to hear from Ricky, Jonny, Wayne and some of our existing players as we prepare our list.

These are fun times, I hope, to be a Timberwolves fan as we continue on this journey.  There will be bumps and bruises along the way, but I believe we are pointed in the right direction.

As always, thank you for your interest and passion.  It makes our jobs easier.

Viva Ricky Rubio!

June 26th, 2009 Howlintwolf No comments

Well folks before I hit the hay after a long day of NBA Draft blogging and watching here’s some quick thoughts before more in depth analysis this weekend:

UPDATE: Every Wolves fan needs to listen to David Kahn on the Dan Patrick radio show this morning. Everytime I hear him talk about the team I feel really good. This man has earned my trust for whatever reason. Maybe it’s because he’s such an honest open book on everything?

Highlights of the segment:

  1. The Wolves are going to be very patient with Rubio and are willing to wait a year or even two if it is better for him to play out his contract in Spain. In two years would still be only 20 when his contract is up.
  2. Kahn says they LOVE Jonny Flynn and that in a different way from Rubio he has electricity crackling out of him.
  3. He honestly thinks that Flynn is going to be one of the best lockdown defenders in the NBA when its all said and done. (mentions that you couldn’t see it in college because Syracuse plays a 2-3 zone.) As I mentioned below he must have impressed with his defense ability and toughness in the big pg workout.
  4. Says we need to see both how Love and Jefferson can play together more as well as Flynn and Rubio, need to let it breathe.
  5. Had one offer for Rubio last night in which a team (not the Knicks) said outside of this one guy on our roster pick two players you want.
  6. Already has gotten two calls this morning for Rubio as well.
  7. He will listen too offers because you have to but really wants to keep him and we are the one team in the league that has the time to wait for him with our horizon being 3-4 years before we can being a contender.
  8. REALLY likes Wayne Ellington as well and feels bad he’s getting overshadowed by Rubio/Flynn
  9. Thought it was high unintentional comedy that the trade they made for #18 had them pick Lawson and loved Roy Williams reaction. Had 8 offers to weigh for that pick and is excited about that pick being a good one next year if its not in the top 12 or 2011 outside top 8.
  10. Insists that their is no coaching list yet but is going to get to work on it right away, DP says he thinks it should be Mark Jackson, Kahn says DP should call him this weekend and tell him why. (they both sound serious too)

Post-Draft Thoughts:

  • The Wolves essentially traded for the #2 pick when they made the trade with Washington because they got their guy in Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio. Don’t listen to all the noise people he will be starting at pg for us on opening night. Initial reaction to that trade with the Wizards has to be to grade it an A right now for Kahn.
  • The Wolves took the BPA available at #6 which happened to be another pg. If people thought that Curry could fit next to Rubio then why not Flynn? He might not be as good a shooter but he brings his own set of talents in his toughness and athleticism that we would all be highlighting right now had Rubio been off the board at #5. Kahn was quoted as saying he’s never seen a player like Flynn play 3-4″ taller than he is. Even though we heard that Evans tore up their pg workout maybe they liked the way Flynn played against him in the workout.
  • Does Kahn trade one of the two? Maybe, maybe not. Only time will tell. He says he really wants both and thinks it will be good. Who said the Wolves need a traditional starting lineup anyway? Or who says that Flynn can’t play a Jason Terry or Leandro Barbosa role off the bench with heavy minutes including down the stretch?
  • If there is going to be a trade the only thing for Kahn to say in the meantime is that he wanted them both and is going to keep both, in order to keep their trade value up.
  • If they do move Rubio NY is obviously hot for him but their best asset, David Lee who would have to be signed and traded, doesn’t fit with Jefferson and Love, so I would expect a 3rd team to be brought in that likes Lee and could send a sg, sf, or c to the Wolves. But what about this idea? The Celtics really want to move Rondo. Would Rubio be enough to get him? If so I think that would be a great move for the Wolves as well, if and only if we think Rubio is going to stay in Spain and drag out his NBA debut.
  • The Wolves made a nice move in trading Lawson to Denver for a future 1st round pick from the Bobcats. Personally I would have loved to see them keep Lawson as I had him rated higher than Flynn but based on how the Wolves rated them they did well to stash that value away in a future pick. If Charlotte is outside the bottom 12 next year the Wolves will most likely have 3 first round picks in a much higher rated draft.
  • Wayne Ellington is a great fit as a shooter at #28. I only wish we had followed it up by grabbing teammate Danny Green at #45 who rated out as the 12th best college prospect in Hollinger’s analysis. As it is we traded our pick Nick Calathes to Dallas for cash and a future 2nd rounder. As for Rubio’s teammate Mr. Norel we probably won’t seem him for a while.

Wolves Draft Day Updates

June 25th, 2009 Howlintwolf No comments

****See below for Chad Ford reporting the exact same trade scenario I posted earlier this morning with the Wolves and Knicks trading #5 for #8 and Wilson Chandler.

From the Draft Express Draft-Day Blog:

Jonathan Givony @ 5:45pm EST

  • With just hours to go before the NBA draft officially kicks off, there is still plenty of uncertainty regarding who is going where exactly. Oklahoma City is heavily involved in trade talks for the #3 team, but appears to be asking for too much for the rights to Ricky Rubio.

Minnesota appeared to be playing it cool in regards to Rubio early on, but has emerged as a major suitor for his services this evening, which will make things very interesting leading up to the #3 pick. OKC seems to be asking for Al Jefferson right now…will they settle on Kevin Love?

Jonathan Givony @ 2:15pm EST

Crazy Trade Rumors:

  • A complicated three-way trade involving New Jersey, Minnesota and Memphis, which would send Devin Harris to Minnesota, the #5 and #6 picks to Memphis and Ricky Rubio and Craig Smith to New Jersey.

From ESPN Draft Buzz Page (Insider):

Chad Ford @ 3:0pm EST

• The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to work the phones as we approach the draft. One interesting scenario that’s arisen is a Knicks proposal that would send Wilson Chandler and the No. 8 pick to Minnesota for either the No. 5 or No. 6 pick.

Why would the Knicks do it? They believe this is a seven-player draft and they’re stuck at 8. If they get to No. 6 they’ll have a shot at Jordan Hill, Stephen Curry or Tyreke Evans there.

Why would the Wolves do it? If they can’t get their hands on Ricky Rubio, most likely they’ll select Jonny Flynn with one of their picks. Since the Warriors aren’t seriously considering Flynn, they can move down two spots, get their guy and pick up a very nice asset in Chandler.

Andy Katz @ 2:13pm EST

Memphis and Minnesota talked again about trading the No. 2 pick (Memphis) to Minnesota for the No. 5 and 6 picks or the No. 5 or 6 and Kevin Love. But the price was too high for Minnesota, so Memphis plans on keeping the pick. According to multiple sources, Memphis would pick Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet.

• Minnesota is hoping to land a specific player at No. 18 — who could be Earl Clark (Louisville) or James Johnson (Wake Forest), among others. If that player isn’t available, then the Wolves are expected to trade the pick, according to a source.

Marc Stein @ 12:31 PM EST

The message coming in from rival executives — while acknowledging that everything is fluid with so much chatter in the air — is that Memphis is looking increasingly likely to keep the No. 2 overall pick unless Minnesota sends No. 5 and No. 6 to the Grizzlies.

The Wolves, by all accounts, still aren’t ready to give up that much.

The latest scenario floated to us is that the Wolves, with those back-to-back picks, would love to snag Stephen Curry and Tyreke Evans, assuming one or both make it to them. Conventional wisdom, by contrast, suggests that the Wolves would take one guard and one big man if they keep Nos. 5 and 6, especially given their need for someone who can guard the rim.

Yet it also must be acknowledged that the Wolves are at the heart of numerous trade scenarios with the four first-round picks they possess.

In other words? Watch this space.

Early Draft Day Wolves Thoughts

June 25th, 2009 Howlintwolf No comments

So Wolves fans are you excited??? If you aren’t we either need to check your pulse or explain to you what a fan is.

I was hoping to have a big draft preview up for you all but got stuck running out of time to put together anything comprehensive.

So without that I will just pontificate from the hip on what I think the Wolves might do today:

  1. The Wolves will end up with 3 backcourt players by the end of the night (And a SF too). The question is who will they be. Ultimately I think the Wolves will stay at #5 and #6 unless they can trade up to #3 with Oklahoma City for only a little more than the #5 (I’m thinking #28 or Craig Smith for instance and not #18). Sources (see here) are now saying the Wolves might use the #18 with #5 to move up to that spot in order to get Tyreke Evans and NOT Ricky Rubio. The thought being that the Kings have Evans on top of their board. (However Chad Ford has been saying that the war room in Sacremento is as split as any in the league and they like Evans and Flynn a lot as well as Stephen Curry who might be a compromise.) What does this all mean??? No one knows. My best guess is that they don’t move up to #3 before the picks are made because they aren’t convinced that either OKC or Sacramento will take Rubio or Evans.
  2. If Curry is on the board at #5 I think the Wolves will take him and then trade him right away to the Knicks. David Kahn took on Songaila’s extra year in the deal for #5 to beat out the Knicks offer for the pick. I think he knows how much his old mentor wants Stephen Curry and I think he will use that tonight to get an extra piece. What piece? I think the Wolves might be able to pry away the young and energetic Wilson Chandler for moving down 3 spots. Once they do move down? They still will be able to take a true pg in Jonny Flynn who is also high on their draft board. (Personally I like Lawson as the second best pure point behind Rubio but I think Flynn is higher on the Wolves board). Most likely they’d take James Harden at #6 and then have a nice traditional (read combo free) backcourt with Flynn at point and Harden at shooting guard.
  3. I think there is a good chance they move up from #18 if the above trade with the Knicks doesn’t happen and they aren’t able to add a guy like Chandler. By packaging #18+#28 they could try and move up as high as #12 with Charlotte and then take another shooting guard like Gerald Henderson or Terrence Williams.
  4. If the Wolves stay at #18 it sounds like Austin Daye is who they want there.
  5. Some other crazy thoughts… Could the Wolves have a chance at Rajon Rondo? Would you trade #5+#6 for him? As he is one of the top 5 pg’s in the league in my opinion I think you would have to do that deal. Especialy after how well he played in the playoffs almost averaging a triple double. They could then trade up from #18 for a shooting guard like I said above to pair with Rondo in the backcourt.

I’ll be around all day and will be updating the blog as well as the twitter account @howlintwolf all day before we jump on the TrueHoop Network LiveBlog-O-Rama Marathon Chat starting at 4pm CST.
