Turn the Wolves Around in One Night? – YES WE KAHN

This is an article written by a friend of mine, Matt Mangskau. He believes that David Kahn is the right man for the job and his vision of turning this team around in the foreseeable future is not as far fetch’d as most fans believe.

With the World Cup on constantly, the buzz of “Vuvuzelas” have been constantly ringing in my ear.  Much like the annoying, two foot long plastic horn, David Kahn and the Timberwolves have been the buzz of the NBA leading up to the 2010 NBA draft.   Dozens of trade rumors have already hit the news but perhaps the best news overall is that Kahn has been working the phones like a mad man over the last week.  Although speculation about the Wolves’ offseason has been fully loaded, including rumors ranging from late round draft picks to Lebron James, Kahn has yet to pull the trigger.

As an avid Wolves fan, I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t concerned about some of the “rumors” I’ve been hearing lately (cough, cough, Hedo Turkoglu, cough).  Honestly though, I am very happy to have David Kahn as our GM at this moment in time.  Many fans, writers, and analysts alike have been quick to criticize Kahn, largely because he wasn’t afraid to take two point guards back to back last year.  I wouldn’t be so quick to judge this year though.  Sitting just hours away from draft night, Kahn has tons of options on the table and has had an entire year to evaluate and prepare for it.

Picture the NBA draft as a game of poker.  Now picture the NBA draft as a game of poker, where table talk is not only legal, but encouraged.   In the case of our Minnesota Timberwolves, we might well have the best “table-talker” in the entire league in David Kahn.   Prior to the draft, he has already discussed deals with nearly every single team in the league.  To make things even better, he hasn’t limited himself only to up and coming players but has actually made an effort to persuade All-Star talent to come to Minnesota.

Regardless of the final course of action this offseason, Wolves fans should be confident that their GM has done his due diligence.   Yes, it is true that no moves have been made and the Wolves are the same 15 win team that they were a year ago, but as Landon Donovan showed us today, sometimes it takes you until the last minute to score.

Timberwolves fans fasten your seatbelts.  The next 48 hours should be a wild ride.
